Mission

The Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito (CASLEO) was formally created on May 10,  1983 by an agreement between the following institutions:

The observatory was dedicated on September  12,  1986 while on March 1, 1987, systematic operation began.

Purpose

 CASLEO is the national facility for ground- based astronomical observations and it offers the necessary instrumentation to the scientific community for carrying out astronomical observations required by the scientific projects on a competitive basis. The main responsibilities of CASLEO are the operation of the observatory and the development of astronomical instrumentation, providing the astronomers technical, and administrative support.

The proposals for observing time presented by Argentinean and foreign astronomers are evaluated by a Scientific Committee.
